The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2021 season is all set to start from April 9 onwards. The 14th edition of the tournament is set to be exciting ahead of a mega auction set for 2022. Over the years, the IPL has witnessed records tumble at a drastic pace with each passing year. From individual heroics to that of teams producing the goods, IPL has never been short of the entertainment factor. When it comes to unique records, the cash-rich league has promised aplenty. We analyse the unique records held in the competition.
Identical economy rates
Former pacers Ashish Nehra and Fidel Edwards have the best economical spell in an innings. The record was equalled by Yuzvendra Chahal in IPL 2019. What is unique is that all three bowlers boast identical match figures. Edwards registered figures of 4-1-6-0 for the Deccan Chargers against Kolkata Knight Riders in 2009. Meanwhile, Nehra (4-1-6-1) notched the figures against Punjab for Delhi in 2009. RCB spinner Chahal repeated the feat against CSK in 2019.
Hold your foot
Former Punjab and Kolkata Knight Riders spinner Piyush Chawla has been a successful bowler in the competition. He has taken 156 scalps. Piyush, who has been roped in by the Mumbai Indians, holds a unique piece of record of bowling the maximum deliveries before bowling a no-ball in the IPL. His first no-ball came for KKR against Delhi in the 2016 season. He bowled a total of 386 overs without bowling a no-ball prior to that.
1 and 500
Former pacer Zaheer Khan is a carrier of a special record in the IPL. Interestingly, the left-arm pacer featured in IPL’s maiden match in 2008 between RCB and KKR. He was also a part of IPL’s 500th match in 2015 season. Zaheer featured for Delhi in IPL’s 500th match. What’s more strange is that both RCB and Delhi lost these games.
Belted and bruised
In the IPL we have witnessed bowlers being smashed all over the park. In the IPL 2018 edition, SRH pacer Basil Thampi scripted an unwanted record for most runs conceded in an innings. Thampi was belted for 70 runs against RCB in his four overs. What is also unique is that four pacers are in the top five for the most runs conceded in an innings. Only Mujeeb Ur Rahman is the lone spinner in the mix (66 runs).
In the IPL 2016 season, RCB skipper Virat Kohli smashed 973 runs. He smashed four tons and seven fifties. In the same season, David Warner smashed 848 runs for SRH and helped them beat RCB in the final. Warner hit nine fifties. This is a unique record where two batsmen scored 800-plus runs in a single season. In every other season, not a single player has managed to get past the mark of 800.
