There was a call for Indian players to play in overseas T20 leagues after the team’s exit from the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia. England thumped the Men in Blue by 10 wickets in the tournament’s semi-final.
Former players Wasim Akram, Anil Kumble, Stephen Fleming, and Tom Moody backed the idea of the players participating in the leagues to develop their game. When head coach Rahul was asked about the same, he said such a step could destroy domestic cricket in India.
He was slammed for his answer, but the veteran has got backing from R Ashwin, saying the coach was right on his part.
“They asked Rahul bhai as soon as the game was over. You can’t ask such a question as a reaction to losing match. It was an unfair question. What do you expect him to reply? He gave a very good reply. We should understand that our domestic season runs during the time of many overseas leagues and you can destroy your own structure for the sake of other tournamnets,” said Ashwin
“So if we won’t play our doemstic cricket, it will impact the Indian team. Infact, many players from other countries hav come to India and returned as better players.”
