South Africa head coach Mark Boucher was in shock after South Africa were stunned by the Netherlands in the ICC T20 World Cup. The defeat confirmed the Proteas’ elimination from the tournament. Boucher said this is one of the worst defeats in their World Cup history, if not the worst.

The Temba Bavuma-led team needed a win to progress to the semi-finals of the T20 event in Australia. But they suffered a shock 13-run defeat on Sunday, November 6.

South Africa conceded 158 runs in their quota of 20 overs, with Kagiso Rabaa and Anrich Nortje failing with the new ball.

Chasing 159, South Africa finished with 145 for 8 in 20 overs. “It is frustating as a coach. It is one of the worst defeats in World Cup history,” Mark Boucher told the press in Adelaide on Sunday.

Boucher, whose tenure as South Africa’s head coach ended, said past performances had no role in their poor display.

“We needed to win but it is not the only upset in the tournament. Some good sides have lost to small teams. It makes the tournament exciting,” he added.
