Ex-Indian opener Virender Sehwag has hit out at the selectors and team management for ignoring senior pacer Mohammed Shami.

Providing his views on India’s win over Pakistan, former India player and 1983 World Cup winner Madan Lal said that the Asia Cup would act as a practice event ahead of the all-important T20 World Cup.

A Hardik Pandya show helped India defeat Pakistan by five-wicket. However, one must not overlook the efforts made by the bowling unit in the absence of star bowlers such as Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel.

Speaking on the same, Madan Lal expressed his happiness over the bowling performance but felt the absence of Mohammed Shami.

He heaped praise on Shami and issued a warning to the selectors. He said, “The selectors must pick Shami for the World Cup. Otherwise, they would be making a big mistake.”

Speaking with Sportskeeda, Lal said, “Shami is India’s best bowler after Bumrah. Thus, I want Shami to be a part of the World Cup squad. I want to see wicket-taking bowlers, not the ones who focus on just containing runs. Hence, it would be a big mistake on the selectors’ part if they do not pick Shami.”

Notably, Shami last played a T20I international against Namibia in November last year. Although, looking at his IPL stats, his exclusion would seem unfair.

The 31-year-old proved to be Gujarat Titans’ bowling spearhead. In his 16 appearances, Shami took 20 wickets and led Gujarat to the IPL glory.

Madan Lal further questioned the selectors and posed some serious questions to them.

“He has a great track record in Australia in the past, so why ignore him? Is he not a better bowler than the ones playing currently? I feel he is one of the finest bowlers in cricket.”
