It's been 11 years since MS Dhoni-led India lifted the 50-over World Cup trophy after 28 years.

Former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir revealed that two or three senior players told him to win the 2011 World Cup to finish the popularity of the 1983 triumph.

Gambhir added that he wanted to win the World Cup for India and make people happy instead of finishing anyone while referring to the contributions of the Kapil Dev-led team.

India won the first Word Cup in 1983 after defeating the mighty West Indies. “Two or three senior players came to me and said ‘we need to win this tournament because we want to end the popularity of the 1983 win,” he told The Indian Express.

“I told them that I am not here to finish someone. My job is to win the World Cup for my country. If the media is giving them jobs from 1983 to 2011, that’s the media’s problem, not ours,” he added.

India defeated Sri Lanka in the finale at the Wankhede Stadium to lift their second 50-over World Cup trophy.
