Tilak Varma has definitely demonstrated exceptional talent, establishing himself as a star batter with the potential to develop into an all-format player for the Indian team in the coming years. His initial performances have been so impactful that mere weeks after his international debut, his name is being touted as a viable solution to India’s middle-order concerns.
Tilak marked his debut during the T20I series against the West Indies and subsequently earned his first ODI call-up as part of India’s squad for the 2023 Asia Cup. This rapid ascent, however, has sparked concerns from former World Cup winner Kris Srikkanth.
On his YouTube channel, Cheeky Cheeka, Srikkanth stated, “Do not thrust Tilak Varma into a high-stakes tournament right away. Instead, have him participate in a few ODI series prior to that.”
He further emphasized, “While Tilak undeniably possesses fantastic potential and exhibits brilliant gameplay, it’s important that he gains experience through a couple of one-day series before being integrated into the World Cup squad. He needs to be groomed properly.”
At 20, Tilak’s journey includes participation in seven T20Is, wherein he has amassed 174 runs, including an impressive half-century. His List A performance is also impressive as he has accumulated 1236 runs across 25 matches at an impressive average of 56.18.
