India dropped Rishabh Pant from the first T20I against Australia in Mohali.

India haven’t finalized their opening pair for the ICC T20 World Cup 2022. The management has tried different options in KL Rahul’s absence.

Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav played as openers in England and the West Indies. While Pant was given two matches against the Jos Buttler-led team, SKY featured as an opening batter in four games in the Windies.

Rahul has returned for the Zimbabwe series and the Asia Cup 2022, but there is a question mark on his fitness. Former Sri Lanka player Mahela Jayawardene is backing Rishabh to open for the Men in Blue in the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 in Australia.

“Even though Pant hasn’t opened the batting much in domestic cricket, he has the talent to do that,” Jayawardena told Sanjana Ganesan on the latest episode of The ICC Review. “You can’t change his game as he is a natural striker of the ball, and yes, he is an option to go out and play as an opening batter.”

Cricket experts have suggested that Rahul Dravid and Rohit Sharma should use him in the powerplay overs when the fielding restrictions are in place.
