The Indian Premier League is set to return to the home and away format in 2023.

BCCI president Sourav Ganguly, who was set to captain India Maharajas in a special match in the upcoming Legends League cricket (LLC), has withdrawn from the league.

LLC’s commissioner Ravi Shastri announced a special match between India Maharajas and World Giants to be played in Eden Gardens on 16th September to celebrate India’s 75th Independence anniversary.

Ganguly agreed to captain the Maharajas’ side. The fans were excited to see their local star return as a player in Kolkata. However, much to their disappointment, Ganguly withdrew from the league, citing personal reasons.

Similar to the early-mid 2000s, Ganguly would have captained Virender Sehwag, Mohammad Kaif, Irfan Pathan, and Harbhajan Singh, who are a part of the Maharajas’ squad.

Ganguly didn’t disclose the reason behind his exit, but the league is bound to suffer in his absence. The match was hyped around dada’s return to Eden Gardens.

LLC will start from 16th September and go on till 8th October. Four teams led by former Indian cricketers Irfan Pathan, Virender Sehwag, Gautam Gambhir, and Harbhajan Singh will compete against each other.

The first season reached 703 million cricket fans globally, becoming the second most watched league after IPL. Thus, with Ganguly’s presence, it was expected to garner more views.
