When India walked out to bat in the first T20I against West Indies, Suryakumar Yadav opened with Rohit Sharma, a move that surprised many. The Indian team management has been experimenting with the top order. With KL Rahul injured, India tried Rishabh Pant and Surya in the opening slot.
Former India fielding coach R Sridhar has been puzzled because Ishan Kishan is already part of the squad. He was taken aback by the decision and added that there is undoubtedly something going on that the fans are unaware of now.
“When I saw Suryakumar walking out to bat with Rohit, I was slightly surprised. I checked if Rishabh Pant was playing the game. Something is happening in the Indian team we are not aware of. Otherwise, I don’t see this management changing the batting order that easy. So I was surprised when SKY opened the batting.”
Suryakumar scored 24 and 11 in the first two games. Sridhar feels the reason behind Suryakumar’s opening was to keep him as a reserve opener in case KL Rahul doesn’t get fit on time.
