Shubman Gill’s heroic helped India whitewash the Men in Maroon. The 22-year-old struck an unbeaten 98 to take India to 236/3 at the end of 36 overs before rain played its part.
The Windies were restricted to 137 by a solid bowling display in the rain-shortened game.
Gill won the player of the match as well as the player of the series award. He scored 50 in the first match and 43 in the second.
In the 3rd and the final ODI, he was heading towards his maiden century, but the weather gods had other plans.
Just before the start of the 37th over, rain poured heavily, forcing the match to be further reduced from 40 to 35 overs, which resulted in a batting change. Hence, Gill didn’t get an opportunity to score his hundred but has managed to etch his name in a unique list that includes Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, and Sunil Gavaskar.
With his unbeaten 98*, Gill joined the list of openers who similarly remained unbeaten on the 90s in ODIs.
Here is the list of openers to remain not out on the 90s in ODIs
92* – Sunil Gavaskar
93* – Kris Srikkanth
96* – Sachin Tendulkar
97* – Shikhar Dhawan
98* – Shubman Gill
99* – Virender Sehwag
Following the innings, Gill expressed his disappointment and said he just needed one over.
He said, “Was hoping to get a hundred, but that (rain) was not under my control. I Was very disappointed with how I got out in the first two ODIs. I tried to play according to the ball and let the instincts take over.”
