Chetan Sharma-led selection committee announced the squad for the white ball series against England. However, the Men in Blue have named different squads for the 1st and the last two T20Is.
The players for the 1st T20I are the same as those who played in Ireland, with Rohit Sharma also included.
While the squad for the last two T20Is feature the marquee players, who were rested for the Proteas and Irish series, Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, and Rishabh Pant are back in the squad.
The major omissions for the last 2 T20Is are Ruturaj Gaikwad, Venkatesh Iyer, Rahul Tripathi, and Sanju Samson. However, Rishabh Pant getting preferred over Samson has left the internet fuming.
Pant struggled in IPL, and even against the Proteas. Whereas, Sanju produced his career’s best innings against Ireland and yet got omitted for the final 2 T20Is. It has not gone well with the cricket fans as struggling Rishabh Pant is a part of the team.
The fans feel that Sanju has been a regular victim of injustice from the board and took to Twitter to express their anger.
Before the Irish tour, BCCI president Sourav Ganguly had mentioned that from the England tour onwards, Rahul Dravid would pick the line-up keeping the T20I World Cup in mind.
The squad for the first T20I is different from the final two due to a mere two-day gap between the rescheduled Test and the first T20I. Hence, it’s believed that the squad named for the last two T20I are the players most likely to feature in Australia. Thus fans are furious after seeing a struggling Rishabh Pant’s name over Sanju Samson.
Few fans expressed their anger by suggesting Samson to retire as the BCCI would continue their injustice against him and favour Pant. While others asked him to play for England or Australia instead.
Former India batter Saba Karim also spoke about Samson’s exclusion and said, “Yes, to some extent it’s been a tough road for him. I think at times the selectors get swayed by the recency in performance. So, if someone has done well in the IPL then you tend to look at such players instead of going back to the players who were selected previously. On some occasions, that’s what has happened with Samson. But irrespective of whatever has transpired in the past, I think Sanju needs to look forward now.”
