The 2nd day of the final Ashes Test was marred with controversy which involved Indian umpire Nitin Menon. On the 3rd ball of the 78th over, Steve Smith played a shot towards mid-wicket and wanted a double. An excellent fielding effort and throw by substitute fielder George Ealham forced Smith to dive to complete the double.
Bairstow quickly dislodged the bail, and the matter went up to third umpire Nitin Menon for a referral. When the replay showed up on the big screen, Smith was short of his ground when Jonny made contact with the stumps, which led to the English players celebrating prematurely and even Smith walking back. However, the replay further showed that the bails were intact despite the stumps being pushed back. After a long delay, Menon gave the decision in Smith’s favour, which drew a massive shout of ‘Boos’ from the crowd.

There was a lot of controversy surrounding the decision, with fans and experts divided on the matter. In a recent development, R Ashwin shared his opinion on the call made by Nitin Menon and expressed his support for the Indian umpire.
“What’s with the Ashes and substitute fielders? #ashes2023 #ashes2005 #garypratt #georgeeahlam Have to applaud Nitin Menon for making the right decision,” tweeted Ashwin.
Smith eventually went on to make 71 (123) which included six fours.
