Former Australian captain Aaron Finch has raised doubts about the inclusion of Ravichandran Ashwin in India’s World Cup squad. The senior spinner, renowned for dominating in Indian conditions, has benefited from the all-rounder Axar Patel’s injury.
In an interview with Star Sports before the third One Day International ODI between India and Australia, Finch made a bold claim.
The absence of spinner Axar Patel due to injury has opened up an opportunity for Ashwin. Ashwin has been making a strong case for himself with his recent performances.
In a crucial series decider against Australia, Ashwin showcased his skills by dismantling the Australian top order. His exceptional bowling performance earned him accolades and strengthened his selection chances for the World Cup.
However, Aaron Finch remains skeptical about Ashwin’s inclusion in the final 15-member squad.
“The rest of the group with the Indian squad for this current series against Australia, I believe, could learn so much about the game from Ashwin. I believe that he (Ashwin) could struggle to make it to the final 15, ” Finch said.
Finch’s comments came in the wake of Ashwin’s impressive performance against the five-time world champions. Ashwin bamboozled Marnus Labuschagne in the series decider in Indore. He also won the battle against David Warner, who resorted to batting right-handed to counter Ashwin.
The 37-year-old Ashwin stood out as the top-performing bowler for India. They convincingly defeated Australia by 99 runs, securing an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series.
“Ashwin has demonstrated throughout his career that he can perform well in crucial games, whether they are Test matches or T20 games. So I wouldn’t be shocked if he becomes a mentor, but I don’t see him making it to the last 15, regrettably,” Finch concluded.
