Piyush Chawla, the seasoned spinner, has been performing consistently for Mumbai Indians in IPL 2023. In the recent game against Gujarat Titans, Chawla picked up crucial wickets of Vijay Shankar and Rahul Tewatia, registering 2/36 in his four-over spell, helping his team restrict Titans to 27 runs short of the target.
Chawla’s performance has been consistent throughout the season, and he is currently third in the IPL 2023 Purple Cap rankings with 19 wickets to his name. This veteran spinner, who was unsold at the mega auction last year, has been a steal deal for Mumbai Indians, and the INR 50 lakh that he is receiving for the season has already been paid back in full.
According to Chawla, his six-year-old son is the driving force behind his hard work and dedication. He revealed that although his son was too young to watch him play during his prime, he now understands the game and recognizes the effort his father puts into it. Chawla stated, “I am playing for my son. He is the reason I kept working hard.”
Chawla has 174 IPL wickets to his name, just 12 wickets behind Yuzvendra Chahal, who recently surpassed Dwayne Bravo to become IPL’s all-time leading wicket-taker. Mumbai Indians started off on a sluggish note this year but have shown great grit and determination, consistently breaching the 200-run mark and registering several victories, strengthening their chances of qualifying for the playoffs, something they haven’t managed to do since their victorious 2020 season.
