Shikhar Dhawan with Punjab Kings
Mohammad Kaif rates Punjab Kings' move to appoint Shikhar Dhawan the new captain

Punjab Kings have never won an IPL title, and the franchise has made several changes for the upcoming season to end their trophy drought.

Ahead of the mini-auctions scheduled in Kochi on December 23, Punjab released nine players from their squad, with the most noticeable one being their skipper, Mayank Agarwal.

The 31-year-old had a dismal season with the bat last year. He scored 196 runs in 13 matches and lacked leadership skills as well. Under Mayank’s tenure, Punjab finished the season in 6th position.

India’s star opener Shikhar Dhawan replaced Mayank as the team’s captain for the upcoming edition. Reacting to the same, former India player turned cricket expert Mohammad Kaif assessed the change and praised Punjab Kings.

Kaif opined that it was the right move by the club and would serve as a good motivation for Dhawan during the tail end of his career.

“I am happy with the move as it shows that people have not forgotten him. The franchise is giving him respect by appointing him the captain. Dhawan will not play for more than 3-4 years. Thus, it will be a great motivation for the southpaw.”

Kaif added that since Dhawan is also leading India in ODIs in Rohit Sharma’s absence, he knows about the players and will do a good job in the IPL.
