Legendary Indian batsman Sunil Gavaskar said that MS Dhoni should be a part of Team India’s coaching staff. Dhoni is playing in the current IPL season and there are rumours of him retiring at the end of the season. However, the 41-year-old might continue to play in IPL 2024 as well.
“MS Dhoni may take over as the Indian team’s coach later. I believe that is how things ought to be. I believe everyone needs some time to recover before working on any assignments with the team (after retiring as a player).” he said.
“Whether you’re on the selection committee, the management team, or the coaching staff, I believe one needs a two or three-year gap to cool down because you’re making decisions about the player you’ve been working with. ” Gavaskar said in an interview during the broadcast of LSG vs CSK.
Dhoni was the mentor of the Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2021. India failed to qualify for the semi-finals of the tournament. The star wicketkeeper was seen spending some time with the cricketers and started grooming the youngsters as well. With his experience, Gavaskar wants him to take up the job after a couple of years because the decisions he will be making will revolve around players he played with.
Chennai are currently third on the IPL Points Table under Dhoni’s captaincy after winning five games in IPL 2023. Dhoni has amazed everyone with his batting abilities, scoring 74 runs in 10 games at an incredible strike rate of 211.42.
Rahul Dravid is the current head coach of Team India.
