Mahela Jayawardene has named the batter he thinks will overtake England’s Joe Root at the top of the ICC Test Batting Rankings.
The former England skipper has been the number one batter since June this year, with the Englishman enjoying fine form in the World Test Championship.
He was named the ICC Men’s Test Player of the Year in 2021. But Jayawardene feels Pakistan captain Babar Azam will claim the top rank in the ICC Test Rankings in the future.
“I would say Babar Azam has an opportunity. He is a gifted player who plays well in all conditions. He has performed well across formats, which also shows in his rankings.
Babar is the only player in the top three in the batters’ rankings across formats. He is in the top spot in white-ball cricket and is currently ranked No.3 in Tests.
