Ravi Shastri came down hard on the national selection committee for ignoring Mohammed Shami for the Asia Cup 2022.

Former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has backed Indian selectors’ move to snub Mohammed Shami for the Asia Cup 2022.

According to him, Shami is at his best in Test cricket, and the Men in Blue have better fast bowlers than him in T20 cricket.

Ponting further added that India would rely on the spinners in Asia Cup 2022 and the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia later this year.

With Jasprit Bumrah and Harshal Patel injured, the selection committee picked only 3 frontline pacers in the 15-man squad for Asia Cup.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan have made the cut. R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Ravi Bishnoi and Yuzvendra Chahal are the four spinners in the squad.

“He’s been an excellent bowler for India in Test cricket. I think there are better fast bowlers than him in the Indian side and had they named four bowlers for the Asia Cup 2022, Shami might have been the fourth option,” said Ponting.

“They will bring four quicks to the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia,” he added.
