Gautam Gambhir wants to see Prithvi Shaw opening the batting for the Men in Blue at the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 if the selectors decide to end the careers of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma in the shortest format of the game.
Shaw was recalled for the T20I series against New Zealand but hasn’t been included in the Playing XI in the first two games.
“I was surprised that he hasn’t got a chance. He deserves a long run in the shortest format. I see him opening the batting in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 if the selectors decide to look beyond Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma,” he said on Star Sports.
While admitting that Shubman Gill is the best option in one-day internationals, the former player feels Shaw is better suited to T20Is.
“Shubman Gill has done well in the fifty-over format, but I feel Prithvi Shaw is a better choice in the shortest format.”
Gambhir further said that Shaw and Ishan could provide explosive starts to the team.
“Ishan Kishan and Prithvi Shaw can be dangerous as openers for the Men in Blue. You need to persist with them. They can play the template we have spoken about for a long time.”
