BCCI has announced the squad for the Asia Cup. Kuldeep Yadav, who was a part of the West Indies tour, has been left out of the squad.
Ever since the announcement, several experts have criticised the selectors for picking weak seaming options. Meanwhile, former India star Sanjay Manjrekar has turned his eye to the spin department for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup.
Manjrekar feels that while the fast-bowling department looks weak, there is an embarrassment of riches in the spin department.
He said that Yuzvendra Chahal is India’s primary spinner going into the Asia Cup as well as the World Cup.
However, the debate is for the second spinner. Kuldeep returned from injury for the 5th T20I and picked up 3 wickets. Thus, Manjrekar feels that it has caused a happy headache.
He said, “India have been experimenting in recent months, and it has paid off, especially in the spin department. Ashwin has performed when given the opportunity, the same goes for Ravi Bishnoi and Axar Patel. Now, with Kuldeep Yadav having a good time against West Indies, it has given more problem to the selectors.”
However, the 57-year-old made a bold claim and said that despite a good return, Yadav won’t be partnering Chahal in the ICC T20 World Cup.
He said that Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin are ahead of the left-arm chinaman in the pecking order.
He added, “What a return by Yadav, but unfortunately, he is unlikely to feature in the playing XI. India needs controlled bowlers, and that is where Ashwin and Axar come in.”
He concluded by saying that even Ravi Bishnoi is ahead of Kuldeep in the pecking order.
