The Indian cricket team recently secured a significant victory in the Asia Cup 2023, under the leadership of Rohit Sharma, by defeating Sri Lanka comprehensively in the final match. This win not only earned them the Asia Cup title but also cemented Rohit Sharma’s reputation as one of the most successful captains in the history of the Asia Cup, marking his second title win and his 10th overall match win as captain.
Former India opener, Gautam Gambhir has expressed confidence in Rohit Sharma’s leadership abilities, citing his remarkable track record as captain, including winning five IPL titles.
Gambhir however issued a warning that the true test of Rohit’s captaincy will be in the upcoming World Cup.
In his analysis on Star Sports following the Asia Cup victory, Gambhir emphasized how the World Cup will be a defining moment for Rohit Sharma’s captaincy.
“Rohit the captain was always without a shadow of a doubt. He won five IPL championships. Many failed to win even once. But the following 15 days will be his true test. Your top 15–18 players are currently with you in the dressing room. There will be doubts if they fail to deliver. If the captain fails to perform after every World Cup, concerns will be raised. It affected Virat Kohli. In 2007, Rahul Dravid experienced it. If India doesn’t perform well in 2023, Rohit’s captaincy will come under scrutiny. However, this group has a chance to reach the World Cup final,” Gambhir said.
The pressure is on as the expectations are high, and the cricket world will be closely watching how Rohit Sharma and his team perform on the grand stage of the 2023 World Cup.
