MS Dhoni retired from international cricket in 2020, and the national team is yet to find an able replacement for him. But the recent performances of the 37-year-old Dinesh Karthik suggests that he might fill those big boots. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri is backing Karthik to play the role of a finisher in the ICC T20 World Cup.
The wicket-keeper batter, who made his debut in 2004, didn’t get enough chances due to the emergence of one of the game’s greatest finishers, MS Dhoni. His role for RCB in IPL 2022 was similar to that of Dhoni. Karthik has been rewarded with a place in the Indian team for the upcoming five-match T20I series against South Africa.
Ravi Shastri has opined on the matter and said that Karthik has to make the oppurtunity count in the upcoming series against the Proteas.
“This is his opportunity. He has to make it count. We know he has the experience, so this becomes extremely vital,” Shastri told Star Sports.
He picked Karthik to do the finisher’s job; something Dhoni did for the Men in Blue.
“You need a keeper who can do MS Dhoni’s job. Karthik is capable of playing the finisher’s role in T20Is. Rishabh Pant can bat in the top order,” he added.
