It has been two weeks since India suffered a 209-run defeat at the World Test Championship final against Australia. Rohit Sharma and Rahul Dravid were at the helm of criticism for leaving R Ashwin out of the playing XI.
Ashwin was India’s leading wicket-taker in the 2021-23 WTC cycle, as the 36-year-old picked up 61 wickets. Despite a scintillating performance over the two years, the No.1 ranked Test bowler was left out of the playing XI, which baffled everyone.
A few days ago, Ashwin opened up on his snub and remarked that he would have loved to be a part of the playing XI because he heavily contributed to the team’s success in these two years.
In recent events, Ashwin appeared on his Youtube channel, where he congratulated Australia for the win and took a dig at head coach Rahul Dravid and skipper Rohit Sharma with an MS Dhoni remark.
The right-arm off-spinner talked about the sense of security for a player, which MS Dhoni provided under his leadership, and brought several accolades for India.
“Congratulations Australia. It was a fantastic final, and they deserved to win. They missed qualifying for the finals in the inaugural WTC by a whisker and have been a consistent side like India. I empathise with the fans when there is an outburst over the lack of an ICC trophy since 2013. But they also say a player should be dropped based on one bad match.”
“A quality of a player does not change overnight. We talk about MS Dhoni’s leadership, his speciality was he provided security to his players. He kept things simple. I played under him, and he picked up a squad of 15 players and the same playing XI will play throughout the year. That sense of security is important.”
