Former India skipper and one of the best fielders of his time, Mohammad Azharuddin has been elected as the new President of Hyderabad Cricket Association. He defeated his closest rival Prakash Chand Jain by 74 votes.

Azhar managed to secure 147 votes out of 223. He has promised to bring back the old glory of Hyderabad cricket. The 56-year old has tried to contest the polls in 2017 but his application was rejected by the returning officer. Though the Andhra Pradesh High Court overturned the ban on Azharuddin in 2012, the governing body of Indian cricket had not lifted the ban.

He led India in three successive World Cups in 1992, 1996 and 1999 and even won the Lok Sabha elections in 2009.
