Virat Kohli took over as India’s Test captain after MS Dhoni quit the format following the Melbourne Test, back in 2014. Then in 2017, Kohli got the leadership role in the ODI and T20I format as well.
Although he hasn't won any ICC competition as a captain, his stats irrespective of the format, is worth envying. As long as he's playing international cricket, it's highly unlikely that anyone would be able to replace him.
However, he is 31 and he isn’t getting any younger. Leading India across all three formats might take a couple of years of his career from him.
For that reason, India should have their backup ready and focus on grooming players for taking the armband from Virat.
In the same light, Fans and pundits have expressed their desire to see KL Rahul lead India in the future. However, here are 4 reasons why Shreyas Iyer will be a better alternative for the captaincy.
1. Age factor
We are talking about a long term replacement for Kohli and there isn't much to separate him and KL Rahul, in terms of age. Shreyas, on the other hand, is still in his early 20's and is already leading the Delhi Capitals in the IPL.
2. Shreyas' influence in DC excellent journey
Delhi Capitals qualified for the playoffs last season and have started this season with four wins from five games, considering the number of young players leading the line. Moreover, Shreyas has done pretty well in terms of leadership, as well as scoring runs from his willow.
3. Ricky Ponting's presence in the DC camp
Ricky Ponting is one of the most successful captains in the history of the game, having won two World Cup's with Australia, during his time with the baggy greens. His presence in the Delhi Capitals' camp has also helped Shreyas, as a captain. By the time Virat retires, Shreyas will be more than ready to take over the reins. At the moment, Shreyas is sharpening his talismanic skills under the watchful eyes of Ponting.
4. Ability to identify the right players
KXIP struggles in IPL 2020 has been largely due to the bad decision making of the captain and management, whether it's the team sheet or making the on-field decisions. DC, however, has been spot on with their squad selection and on-field management, and the credit largely goes to the Shreyas-Ponting duo.
