5 lowest totals defended in IPL history

On 24th April 2018, when Sunrisers Hyderabad defended the total of 118 runs against defending champions Mumbai Indians, it once again proved that any total can be defended, if the bowling unit shows the discipline. Sunrisers’ bowlers kept Mumbai Indians under check and gave their team a satisfying victory of 31 runs over the Mumbai Indians. We look at the five such instances when the low scores were defended in the IPL.

CSK defending 116 against KXIP (2009)

In 2009, CSK managed a total of just 116 runs against Kings XI Punjab. However, they were able to stop Kings XI Punjab for just 92 runs in 20 overs and won the match by a margin of 24 runs. Spinners Muttiah Muralitharan and R Ashwin saved the day for CSK as they gave economical performances of 2/8 and 2/13, respectively.

SRH defending 118 against MI (2018)

Riding high on the success of their bowling unit, Sunrisers Hyderabad once again proved that IPL is not just the batsmen’s game. The franchise defended the score of 118 runs against Mumbai Indians. Although their star bowler Bhuvneshwar Kumar did not play the match due to back injury, Siddarth Kaul and Rashid Khan stood up on the occasion and gave one of the most memorable victories to Sunrisers Hyderabad.

KXIP defending 119 against MI (2009)

With the help of Kumar Sangakkara’s knock of 45 runs, Punjab managed to put 119 runs against Mumbai Indians. Although, KXIP bowlers simply proved too much for the MI and managed to give KXIP a victory of three runs. The hero of the match was Yusuf Abdulla turned, who bowled well for Punjab, as he had the figures of 2/19.

SRH defending 119 against PWI (2013)

Sunrisers Hyderabad time and again have proved that IPL is not just the batsman’s game. In the game against Pune Warriors India back in 2013, Sunrisers scored just 119 runs in their 20 overs. But it was enough for their bowling unit to defend as they registered the win by 11 runs against the Pune Warriors. Thisara Perera got the man of the match for taking three wickets.

MI defending 120 against PWI (2012)

Mumbai Indians defended 120 runs against their neighbours Pune Warriors in 2012. Sachin Tendulkar and James Franklin gave MI a 50-run partnership for the opening wicket, but the remaining batting unit simply fell apart. However, the bowling unit of Mumbai Indians gave a splendid performance. In the end, Mumbai won the nail biting encounter by just 1 run. Lasith Malinga got the man of the match award for his bowling performance.
